Sonya Yoncheva Cancels Final ‘Tosca’

By Francisco Salazar

Sonya Yoncheva has canceled her final performance of “Tosca” at the Opera de Paris.

The Paris Opera announced that due to illness the soprano would no longer be able to perform on June 5. As a result, Elena Stikhina will replace Yoncheva, singing the title role of “Tosca.”

This will be the second performance for Stikhina, who replaced Yoncheva on June 1. The Russian soprano is currently rehearsing Verdi’s “La Forza del Destino” at the Opera de Paris which opens on June 6. Stikhina recently made her Metropolitan Opera debut and is set to make her role debut as “Medee” at the Salzburg Festival where she replaced Yoncheva for the full run.

Stikhina joins Marcelo Puente and Luca Salsi with Dan Ettinger conducting the production by Pierre Audi.

Yoncheva returns to the stage for concerts in Austria and Belgium.
