Sonya Yoncheva, Adriana González, Iestyn Davies Headline Château de Versailles Spectacles Royal Opera House 2022-23 Season

The Château de Versailles Spectacles Royal Opera House has unveiled its 2022-23 season.

For the purposes of this article, our focus will be solely on vocal performances.

The vocal portion of the season kicks off with a performance of Berlioz’s “Roméo et Juliette” with Virginie Verrez, Andrew Staples, and Edwin Crossley-Mercer. Daniel Harding conducts the Choeur de Radio France and the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France.

Performance Date: Oct. 1, 2022 

Gaétan Jarry leads the Orchestre de l’Opéra Royal in a gala that showcases the talents of Florie Valiquette, Robert Gleadow, Cécile Achille, and Adèle Carlier. The gala will feature music by Mozart.

Performance Date: Oct. 9, 2022

Stéphane Fuget will lead a performance of Monteverdi’s “Orfeo” starring Julian Prégardien, Gwendoline Blondeel, Marie Perbost, Eva Zaïck, Luc Bertin-Hugault, Luigi De Donato, Vlad Crosman, and Paul Figuier.

Performance Date: Oct. 18, 2022

Marc Minkowski leads Les Musiciens du Louvre in a concert featuring the music of Gluck and Händel alongside Magdalena Kozená, Marianne Crebassa, Stanislas De Barbeyrac, and Florian Sempey.

Performance Date: Oct. 19, 2022 

Adriana González, Cyrille Dubois, Caroline Jestaedt, Sahy Ratia, Cécile Achille, Adèle Carlier, Laura Jarrell, and Lucie Edel headline Gluck’s “Echo et Narcisse.” Hervé Niquet conducts Le Concert Spirituel.

Performance Date: Oct. 21, 2022

Sonya Yoncheva appears in recital alongside the Orchestre de l’Opéra Royal and conductor Stefan Plewniak.

Performance Date: Nov. 7, 2022

Gaétan Jarry conducts a staged production of Charpentier’s “David et Jonathas” directed by Marshall Pynkoski. The cast stars Reinoud Van Mechelen, Caroline Arnaud, David Witczak, François-Olivier Jean, Antonin Rondepierre, Geoffroy Buffière, and Virgile Ancely.

Performance Date: Nov. 10-12, 2022

Musicians from the National Conservatories of music and dance in both Paris and Lyon will team up with Les Pages et les Chantres du Centre de musique baroque de Versailles for a program of music by Campra, de Lalanda, Gervais, and Bernier. Emmanuelle Haïm conducts.

Performance Date: Nov. 17, 2022 

Corinne and Gilles Benizio direct “King Arthur.” Le Concert Spirituel performs alongside such soloists as Chantal Santon-Jeffrey, Bénédicte Tauran, Mathias Vidal, Romain Dayez, and Douglas Williams.

Performance Date: Nov. 18-20, 2022

Gwendoline Blondeel, Cécile Achille, David Tricou, Mathias Vidal, and Geoffroy Bueffière headline a concert of music by Charpentier. Valentine Tournet conducts La Chapelle Harmonique.

Performance Date: Nov. 20, 2022

Sylvain Sartre leads Les Ombres and the Choeur du Concert Spirituel in music by Gervais and Vivaldi. Soloists include Judith van Wanroij, Deborah Cachet, Paul Figuier, Nicholas Scott, Zachary Wilder, and Benoit Arnould.

Performance Date: Nov. 23, 2022

Bruno de Sá and Il Pomo d’Oro under Francesco Corti will perform music by Scarlatti, Vivaldi, Corelli, Porpora, Cocchi, Hasse, and Galuppi.

Performance Date: Nov. 28, 2022

Jean-Yves Ruf directs “La Finta Pazza.” Leonardo Garcia Alarcón conducts the Cappella Mediterranea and a cast of singers that icnludes Mariana Flores, Filippo Mineccia, Gabriel Jublin, Valerio Contaldo, and Alejandro Meerapfel, among others.

Performance Date: Dec. 3 & 4, 2022

Gilles’s “Requiem” will feature Eugénie Lefebvre, Clément Debieuvre, Matthias Vidal, and David Witczak. Fabien Armengaud conducts the Helsinki Baroque Orchestra.

Performance Date: Dec. 8, 2022

John Eliot Gardiner leads the Monteverdi Choir and English Baroque Soloists in Bach’s “Christmas Oratorio.”

Performance Date: Dec. 11, 2022

William Christie and Les Arts Florissants perform music by Charpentier for the holiday spirit. Soloists include Julie Roset, Emmanuelle de Negri, Lisandro Abadie, and Bastien Rimondi

Performance Date: Dec. 16, 2022

Franco Fagioli will conduct the Orchestre de l’Opéra Royal in Händel’s “Messiah.” Marie Lys, Margherita Maria Sala, Pablo Bemsch, and Alex Rosen perform alongside the Choeur de Chambre du Palais de la Musique Catalane de Barcelone.

Performance Date: Dec. 17 – 18, 2022

There will be a production of Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte” directed by Cécile Roussat and Julien Lubek. Hervé Niquet conducts Le Concert Spirituel and a cast starring Florie Valiquette, Mathias Vidal, Marc Scoffoni, Emma Posman, and Guilhem Worms.

Performance Date: Dec. 27, 2022 – Jan 1, 2023

There will be a production of “Le Nozze di Figaro” starring Robert Gleadow, Ana Maria Labin, Thomas Dolié, and Angela Brower. Marc Minkowski conducts Les Musiciens du Louvre.

Performance Date: Jan. 15 & 20, 2023

Alexandre Duhamel, Robert Gleadow, Ana Maria Labin, Ariana Vendittelli, Julien Henric, Alix le Saux, and Alex Rosen star in “Don Giovanni,” also conducted by Marc Minkowski.

Performance Date: Jan. 17 & 21, 2023

Minkowski will also lead “Così fan tutte” with a cast starring Ana Maria Labin, Angela Brower, Miriam Albano, James Ley, Robert Gleadow, and Alexandre Duhamel.

Performance Date: Jan. 18 & 22, 2023

Reinoud Van Mechelen conducts Jacquet de La Guerre’s “Céphale et rocris” with Ema Nikolavska, Déborah Cachet, Lore Binon, Gwendoline Blondeel, Marc Mauillon, Lisandro Abadie, and Samuel Namotte.

Performance Date: Jan. 22, 2023

For Monteverdi’s “L’Incoronazione di Poppea,” Leonardo García Alarcón will conduct the Cappella Mediterranea and a cast starring Elsa Benoit, Jake Arditti, Ambroisine Bré, Iestyn Davies, and Alex R0sen, among others.

Performance Date: Jan. 28 – 31, 2023

William Christie and Les Art Florissants will present Purcell’s “Dido and Aeneas.” The cast includes Helen Charlston, Ana Vieira Leite, Renato Dolcini, Maud Gnidzaz, Virginie Thomas, and Jacob Lawrence.

Performance Date: March 17 – 19, 2023

There will be a host of concerts during Holy Week. Kicking things off will be a performance of Couperin’s “Leçons de Ténèbres” and “Motet pour le Jour de Pâques.”with the Orchestre de l’Opéra Royal. Gaétan Jarry conducts.  Ana Quintans and Adèle Carlier are the soloists.

Performance Date: April 5, 2023

Andres Gabetta will conduct Pergolesi’s “Stabat Mater” and music by Vivaldi. Bruno de Sá and Cameron Shahbazi are the soloists.

Performance Date: April 6, 2023

Sir John Eliot Gardiner conducts the Monteverdi Choir in Bach’s Mass in B Minor.

Performance Date: April 8, 2023

Grétry’s “La Caravane du Caire” gets a showcase in a production directed by Marshall Pynkoski and Hervé Niquet. Soloists include Hélène Guilmette, Gwendoline Blondeel, Mathias Vidal, Tassis Christoyannis, Hasnaa Bennani, and David Wi

Performance Date: June 9-11, 2023

Closing out the season will be Regent Phillippe d’Orléan’s “Jérusalem Deliveré.”
