Sony Classical To Release Jonas Kaufmann’s ‘Otello’

By Francisco Salazar

Sony Classical has announced the release of Verdi’s “Otello” from the Royal Opera House.

The production, which premiered last summer at the Royal Opera, stars Jonas Kaufmann in his role debut, Maria Agresta, and Marco Vratogna. Antonio Pappano conducted the production, which was directed by Keith Warner.

When the production premiered OperaWire noted, “Jonas Kaufmann Cements His Legacy As One of History’s Great Otellos.” It also praised Maria Agresta for her “pure lyrical beauty” and Vratogna for “his growing presence.” Pappano also received praise as did Warner’s minimilastic production.

This is the 13th DVD release that Kaufmann receives from Sony Classical. Previously the company released three concert performances, “Don Carlo,” “Manon Lescaut,” “Fidelio,” “La Forza del Destino,” “Cavalleria Rusticana/Pagliacci,” “La Fanciulla del West,” “Ariadne auf Naxo,” and “Parsifal.”

The DVD is slated for a May 11 release in Europe followed by a U.S. release.
