Sony Classical Announces New ‘Otello’ With Jonas Kaufmann

Sony Classical has announced a new recording of Verdi’s “Otello” starring Jonas Kaufmann in the title role.

The new recording is also set to star Carlos Alvarez as Iago and Federica Lombardi as Desdemonda with Antonio Pappano conducting the orchestra and choir Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia.

The new recording will mark Kaufmann’s first CD recording of the role, which he has performed in London and Munich to great acclaim. Sony Classical previously released a DVD of his Royal Opera House appearance which OperaWire called, “One of History’s Great Otellos.”

Th recording will also mark Lombardi’s first album for the company and Alvarez’s third recording of the opera. The baritone’s interpretation was previously released by C Major from the Salzburg Festival with Aleksandrs Antonenko and from the Salzburg Easter Festival with Jose Cura.

It also marks the latest collaboration between Pappano and Kaufmann, who have previously recorded “Aida” and the Puccini album, among others.

“Otello” is set for release in March.
