On Dec. 6, the Teatro San Carlo will open its 2025-26 season with a new production of Cherubini’s “Medea”

The production will mark the first time the Napoli, Italy theater performs the work.

The opera will be conducted by Riccardo Frizza and will star Sondra Radvanovsky in her acclaimed interpretation. She will be joined by Francesco Demuro, Giorgio Berrugi,  Giorgi Manoshvili, Désirée Giove, and Anita Rachvelishvili. Mario Martone directs the work.

In a statement regarding the work, Frizza said, “Amazingly, Medea has never been performed at the Teatro San CarIo, and it’s for this reason that I am honoured to be breaking with convention, working on something of historical significance for this theatre that I love so much and where, during the season we’re about to open, I will have the opportunity to bring many operatic and symphonic projects to fruition.”

Regarding Radvanovsky’s interpretation, OperaWire raved stating, “Sondra Radvanovsky Reigns Supreme in Cherubini’s Masterwork Tragedy.”

“Medea” opens on Dec. 6 and will run through Dec. 16, 2025. The first performance will be streamed on Rai Radio 3.
