Sondra Radvanovsky, Federica Lombardi, Carmen Giannattasio & Asmik Grigorian Lead Deutsche Oper Berlin’s 2023-24 Season

The Deutsche Oper Berlin has announced its 2023-24 season featuring six new productions.

Premieres 

Puccini’s “Il Trittico”  is set to be directed by Pınar Karabulut and conducted by Sir Donald Runnicles. “Il Tabarro” will star Misha Kiria, Jonathan Tetelman, Mikhail Pirogov, Carmen Giannattasio, and Maria Motolygina. Meanwhile “Suor Angelica” will star Mané Galoyan, Violeta Urmana, and Annika Schlicht. Finally, “Gianni Schicchi” will be headlined by Misha Kiria, Mané Galoyan, Elisa Verzier, and Andrei Danilov.

Performance Dates: Sept. 30-Dec. 14, 2023 

Federica Lombardi headlines David Alden’s production of Donizetti’s “Anna Bolena.” The first cast will include Vasilisa Berzhanskaya, René Barbera, and Karis Tucker. The second cast will include Jana Kurucová, Xabier Anduaga, and Arianna Manganello. Enrique Mazzola and Daniele Squeo share conducting duites.

Performance Dates: Dec. 15, 2023-March 19, 2024

Mark Stone, Vera-Lotte Boecker, Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen, Irene Roberts, and Chance Jonas-O’Toole star in George Benjamin’s “Written on Skin.” Marc Albrecht conducts the production by Katie Mitchell.

Performance Dates: Jan. 27-Feb. 15, 2024

Martin Muehle and Sondra Radvanovsky headline Tchaikovsky’ “Pique Dame.” The cast also includes Hanna Schwarz, Lucio Gallo, Thomas Lehman, Philipp Jekal, Annika Schlicht, and Karis Tucker. Sebastian Weigle conducts the new production by Sam Brown.

Performance Dates: March 9-27, 2024

Richard Strauss’ “Intermezzo” will be conducted by Sir Donald Runnicles and directed by Tobias Kratzer. The cast includes Thomas Johannes Mayer, Maria Bengtsson, Flurina Stucki, Alexandra Hutton, Thomas Blondelle, Jörg Schörner, Gerard Farreras, Kirsi Tiihonen, Padraic Rowan, Michael Bachtadze, and Tobias Kehrer.

Performance Dates: April 25-June 14, 2024

Kyle Miller, Thomas Lehman, Seth Carico, Ya-Chung Huang, Heidi Stober, and Hye-Young Moon star in John Adams’ “Nixon in China” with Daniel Carter conducting the production by Hauen und Stech.

Performance Dates: June 22-July 12, 2024

Repertoire 

Mozart’s “Die Zauberflote” is set to open the season and be performed throughout the year. The opera will star multiple casts headed by Tobias Kehrer, Patrick Guetti, Matthew Newlin, Attilio Glaser, Kieran Carrel, Hye-Young Moon, Sua Jo, Lilit Davtyan, Flurina Stucki, Maria Motolygina, Annika Schlicht, Arianna Manganello, Maire Therese Carmack, Lilit Davtyan, Meechot Marrero, Philipp Jekal, Artur Garbas, and Burkhard Ulrich.

Performance Dates: August 27, 2023-April 21, 2024

Rossini’s “Il Viaggio in Reims” is set to star Elena Tsallagova, Elmina Hasan, Hye-Young Moon, Hulkar Sabirova, Mingjie Lei, Omar Mancini, Joel Allison, Artur Garbas, Philipp Jekal, and Kyle Miller. Michele Spotti and Giulio Cilona conduct.

Performance Dates: Sept. 2-Oct. 1, 2023

Carmen Giannattasio, Elena Stikhina, and Camilla Nylund lead Puccini’s “Tosca.” Martin Muehle, Vittorio Grigolo, Ludovic Tézier, Gevorg Hakobyan, and Erwin Schrott also star. Sir Donald Runnicles and Andrea Battistoni star.

Anja Harteros, Mikhail Pirogov, Lauren Decker, Amartuvshin Enkhbat, Arianna Manganello, Sua Jo, and Dean Murphy star in Mascagni’s “Cavalleria Rusticana” and Leoncavallo’s “Pagliacci.”Paolo Arrivabeni conducts.

Giulio Cilona and Lorenzo Passerini conduct a revival of Rossini’s “Il Barbiere di Siviglia” with Matthew Newlin, Juan de Dios Mateos, Alexey Zelenkov, Misha Kiria, Arianna Manganello, Cecilia Molinari, Vasilisa Berzhanskaya, Philipp Jekal, Mattia Olivieri, Gerard Farreras, and Elisa Verzier.

Elena Stikhina and Asmik Grigorian headline Puccini’s “Madama Butterfly” with Karis Tucker, Irene Roberts, Jonathan Tetelman, Joshua Guerrero, Markus Brück, Dong-Hwan Lee, Burkhard Ulrich, and Gideon Poppe.

Performance Dates: Sept. 10, 2023-June 20, 2024

Wagner’s “Der Fliegende Holländer” is set to star Tobias Kehrer, Elisabeth Teige, Vida Miknevičiūtė, Robert Watson, Matthew Newlin, Lauren Decker, Michael Volle, and Noel Bouley. Ivan Repušić and Dominic Limburg conduct.

Catherine Foster and Ewa Plonka headline Puccini’s “Turandot” with Martin Muehle, Fabio Sartori, Clemens Bieber, Maria Motolygina, Sua Jo, Michael Bachtadze, and Samuel Dale Johnson.

Performance Dates: Oct. 3, 2023-Jan. 7, 2024

Bizet’s “Carmen” will star Aigul Akhmetshina, Meechot Marrero, Arianna Manganello, Maria Motolygina, and David Butt Philip. Ben Glassberg conducts the revival.

James Conlon conducts Wagner’s “Lohengrin” with a cast that includest Ryan Speedo Green, David Butt Philip, Jennifer Davis, Jordan Shanahan, Yulia Matochkina, and Dean Murphy.

The company will present the “Operngala für die Deutsche AIDS-Stiftung.”

Carmen Giannattasio sings the title role of Ponchielli’s “La Gioconda” alongside Marianne Cornetti, Marko Mimica, Judit Kutasi, Joseph Calleja, and Noel Bouley. John Fiore and Giulio Cilona conduct.

Attilio Glaser, Dean Murphy, Thomas Lehman, Gerard Farreras, Sua Jo, and Elisa Verzier headline Puccini’s “La Bohème” with Giulio Cilona conducting.

Bach’s “Matthäus-Passion” will be conducted by Alessandro De Marchi and will star Kieran Carrel, Padraic Rowan, Michael Bachtadze, Dean Murphy, Siobhan Stagg, Annika Schlicht, and Joel Allison.

Performance Date: March 24-31, 2024

Beethoven’s “Fidelio” returns to the company with a cast led by Philipp Jekal, Markus Brück, Valentyn Dytiuk, Flurina Stucki, Tobias Kehrer, Lilit Davtyan, and Gideon Popp.

Performance Date: April 12-20, 2024

The Ring Cycle will be performed three times. “Das Rheingold” will star Iain Paterson, Thomas Lehman, Attilio Glaser, Thomas Blondelle, Jordan Shanahan, Ya-Chung Huang, Albert Pesendorfer, Tobias Kehrer, Annika Schlicht, and Flurina Stucki .

“Die Walkure” is set to star Michael König, Tobias Kehrer, Derek Welton, Elisabeth Teige, Annika Schlicht, and Ricarda Merbeth, while “Siegfried” will be headlined by Clay Hilley, Ya-Chung Huang, Iain Paterson, Jordan Shanahan, Tobias Kehrer, Lindsay Ammann, and Elisabeth Teige.

Finally, “Gotterdammerung” will be sung by Clay Hilley, Thomas Lehman, Jordan Shanahan, Albert Pesendorfer, Ricarda Merbeth, Felicia Moore, Annika Schlicht, Lindsay Ammann, Karis Tucker, and Sua Jo.
