Sondra Radvanovsky, Christine Goerke, Iestyn Davies Among Stars of Edinburgh International Festival

The Edinburgh International Festival has announced its 2019 slate, which will feature a wide range of performances across opera, classical music, theatre, dance, and contemporary music. For this article, we will place focus solely on opera productions.

The first of these is Barrie Kosky and the Komische Oper Berlin’s production of “Eugene Onegin,” which will feature Günther Papendell and Michael Nagy sharing the title role. Asmik Grigorian and Nadja Mchantaf will trade off as Tatyana while Oleksiy Palchykov and Ales Briscein will both alternate as Lensky. Ainars Rubikis will conduct.

Performance Dates: August 15-17, 2019 

Iestyn Davies, Sophie Bevan, and Rowan Pierce will star in “Orfeo ed Euridice.” They will be joined by The English Concert and conductor Bernard Labadie.

The Yiddish operetta “Forget Me Not” will be showcased in a production by Barrie Kosky. Alma Sadé and Helene Schneiderman will star.

Performance Date: August 16, 2019

Missy Mazzoli’s “Breaking the Waves” will get its European premiere with a cast that includes Duncan Rock, Wallis Giunta, and Syndey Mancasola, among others. Stuart Stratford conduts.

Performance Dates: August 21-24, 2019 

Maestro Donald Runnicles and the Deustche Oper Berlin will present Puccini’s “Manon Lescaut” with Sondra Radvanovsky headlining the cast. Martin Muehle is Des Grieux and Thomas Lehman is Lescaut

Performance Date: August 22, 2019

The Royal Scottish National Opera and conductor Sir Andrew Davis will bring Wagner’s “Götterdämmerung” to the festival. Christine Goerke will star as Brünnhilde with Burkhard Fritz as Siegfried. Ain Anger will be Hagen and Karen Cargill will star as Waltraude and the Second Norn. The concert performance will be broadcast on BBC Radio 3.
