Sondra Radvanovsky, Ana María Martínez & Jennifer Higdon Highlight Opera Philadelphia’ 2020-21 Season

Opera Philadelphia has announced its 2020-21 season with the theme Fortune & Might.

O20 Festival 

Jennifer Higdon and Jerre Dye’s “Woman with Eyes Closed” makes its world premiere opening the Opera Philadelphia’s festival. German director Christian Räth helms the production which is set to star Meredith Arwady, Kevin Ray, Fleur Barron, and Wei Wu

Performance Dates: Sept. 17-26, 2020

Verdi’s “Macbeth” gets a new production by Paul Curran with Sondra Radvanovsky in her role debut as Lady Macbeth. Radvanovsky will alternate the role Ewa Płonka in her company debut and Roberto Frontali will sing the title role. Richard Trey Smagur, Rafael Moras, and Patrick Guetti round out the cast with Corrado Rovaris conducting the opera, written by Piave.

Performance Dates: Sept. 18-27, 2020

Hans Werner Henze and Hans Magnus Enzensberger’ “El Cimarrón” is set to star Sir Willard White in his Opera Philadelphia debut.

Performance Dates: Sept 19-24, 2020

Lawrence Brownlee is set to perform a recital alongside Michael Spyres of Bel Canto favorites. Corrado Rovaris conducts.

Performance Dates: Sept. 16, 2020

Today’s leading singers perform alongside the opera stars of tomorrow with rising soprano Ashley Milanese joining. The “Curtis in Concert” series will showcase Friday afternoon concerts with the young voices of Curtis Opera Theatre. Additional singers and repertoire to be announced.

Performance Dates: Sept 18 & 25, 2020

“Afternoons at AVA” are set to showcase today’s leading singers alongside the opera stars of tomorrow. Internationally renowned soprano Joyce El-Khoury returns to the acclaimed Academy of Vocal Arts to perform in Saturday afternoon recitals with current students. Additional singers and repertoire to be announced.

Performance Dates: Sept. 19 & 26, 2020

After the opera, savor a range of “Late Night Snacks,” as some of O20’s most distinguished opera stars unleash their more fabulous alter egos in a series of informal, inclusive cabaret nights alongside artists across drag, cabaret, dance, and other music genres.

Winter & Spring productions

Stravinsky’s “Oedipus Rex” gets concert performances with Maestro Robert Spano conducting. The cast is set to star William Burden, Mark S. Doss, and Rehanna Thelwell.

Performance Dates: Jan 29 & 31, 2021

Opera Philadelphia’s closes its season with “Tosca” starring Ana María Martínez in her company and title role debuts. She is joined by Piero Pretti, Quinn Kelsey, and Michael Sumuel. Music Director Corrado Rovaris conducts the Puccini opera, written by Giacosa and Illica.

Performance Dates: April 30-May 9, 2021
