The Lyric Opera of Chicago has announced the bass-baritone Bryn Terfel will be canceling his recital scheduled for Feb. 2, 2020.

The cancelation comes days after the famed singer fractured his ankle while working on a production for “The Flying Dutchman” in Bilbao. According to his physician, he will need surgery to help in his recovery. Per the press release from the Lyric Opera of Chicago, there is no rescheduled recital date at this time.

“Returning to Chicago after nearly 15 years was an absolute dream come true. This terrible fall in Bilbao has dealt me a cruel blow. A performer always dreads the days where cancelations are imminent,” Terfel stated per the press release. “I was despondent not to finish the last performance in Bilbao, but am happy I came to that conclusion having learnt today of a triple fracture and dislocation.”

Next up for Terfel is a production of “The Flying Dutchman” at the Metropolitan Opera, scheduled to open on March 2, 2020. There is yet no word on whether the bass-baritone will recover in time to take on the production of the Wagner opera.
