Simone Piazzola, Martina Serafin & Luís Gomes Lead Teatro Nacional de São Carlos’ 2022-23 Season

The Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in Lisbon has announced its 2022-23 season.

Opera

The season opens with Donizetti’s “L’Elisir d’Amore” starring Rita Marques, Antonio Garés, Ricardo Panela, Joana Seara, and Ricardo Seguel. The new production will be directed by Mário João Alves and conducted by Antonio Pirolli.

Performance Dates: Oct. 1 – 8, 2022 

Corghi’s “Blimunda” will be conducted by José Eduardo Gomes and stars Dora Rodrigues, Peter Wedd, Luís Rodrigues, Maria Luísa de Freitas, and Luís Madureira.

Performance Dates: Nov. 11 – 16, 2022 

Azevedo’s “O rouxinol” will be conducted by João Paulo Santos and stars Ana Sofia Ventura and Diogo Oliveira. The opera will be directed by Mário João Alves.

Performance Dates: Jan. 29 – 31, 2023 

Margiona Qerkezi, Simone Piazzola, Luís Gomes, Fabrizio Beggi, Marco Alves dos Santos, and Patrícia Quinta headline “Lucia di Lammermoor.” Antonio Pirolli conducts the new production by Alfonso Romero Mora.

Performance Dates: March 3 -10, 2023 

“Der Fliegende Holländer” will star Thomas Gazheli, Martina Serafin, Peter Wedd, and Peter Rose. Graeme Jenkins conducts a new production directed by Max Hoehn.

Performance Dates: April 24 & 26, 2023 

Cristiana Oliveira, Cátia Moreso, Azer Zada, Kiril Manolov, and Dario Russo star in “Il Trovatore,” as conducted by Antonio Pirolli.

Performance Dates: June 3 – 14, 2023 

Concerts

Soprano Bárbara Barrados will sing music by composer and conductor Nuno Côrte-Real alongside the Coro do Teatro Nacional de São Carlos and the Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa.

Performance Dates: Dec. 13, 202 

Antonio Pirolli will conduct Puccini’s “Messa di Gloria” with Luís Gomes and André Baleiro as the soloists.

Performance Dates: Dec. 22 & 23, 2022 

Sylvain Gasançon will conduct the Coro do Teatro Nacional de São Carlos and the Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa in music by Strauss II, Chabrier, von Suppé, Offenbach, and Gounod, among others.

Performance Dates: Jan. 2, 2023

Nuno Côrte-Real will conduct a concert featuring his own music as well as works by Wagner and Frank with soprano Elisabete Matos as the soloist.

Performance Dates: Jan. 13, 2023 

Mezzo-soprano Maria Luísa de Freitas will headline a concert featuring music by Prokofiev and Respighi. Antonio Pirolli conducts the Coro do Teatro Nacional de São Carlos and the Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa.

Performance Dates: March 18 & 19, 2023 

José Eduardo Gomes will conduct the Coro do Teatro Nacional de São Carlos and the Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa in music by José Vianna da Motta.

Performance Dates: March 31, 2023 

Antonio Pirolli leads the Coro do Teatro Nacional de São Carlos and the Orquestra Sinfónica Portuguesa in Mahler’s Second Symphony. Carla Caramujo and María José Montiel are the soloists.
