Simon Keenlyside, Stéphanie d’Oustrac, Michele Losier Headline Opéra de Lyon’s 2020-21 Season

It all kicks off with Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Le Coq d’Or” in a production directed by Barrie Kosky and conducted by Aziz Shokhakimov. Andrei Popov, Sabine Devieilhe, Dmitry Ulyanov, and Mischa Schelomianski star.
Performance Dates: Oct. 10-22, 2020
Next up is Massenet’s “Werther” starring Simon Keenlyside, Stéphanie d’Oustrac, Jean-Sébastien Bou, and Marc Barrard. Daniele Rustioni conducts the concert performance.
Performance Date: Nov. 20, 2020
Daniele Rustioni conducts Damiano Michieletto’s production of “Béatrice et Bénédict” starring Michele Loisier, Julien Behr, Hélène Guilmette, and Thomas Dolié.
Performance Dates: Dec. 12, 2020 -Jan. 1, 2021
Robert Lepage directors Stravinsky’s “Le Rossignol et autres fables” with a cast that includes Anna Denisova, Yulia Pogrebnyak, Mairam Sokolova, Taras Berezhasnky, Nabil Suliman, Andrey Danilov, and Roman Chabaranok. Daniele Rustioni conducts.
The company will also present Isabelle Aboulker’s “Les Enfants du Levant” in a production by Pauline Laidet, conducted by Karine Locatelli.

Carl Maria von Weber’s “Die Freischütz” gets a production by Dmitri Tcherniakov conducted by Daniele Rustioni. Tuomas Katajala and Mandy Fredich star.

Opera Festivals

In March, the company kicks off a festival dedicated to “Free Women?” “Bluebeard’s Castle” gets a production by Andriy Zholdak conducted by Titus Engel. Kàroly Szemerédy stars as Bluebeard with Eve-Maud Hubeaux and Victoria Karkacheva rotating as Judith.

Paul Dukas’ “Ariane et Barbe-Bleue” gets a production by Alex Ollé and La Fura dels Baus under the musical direction of Lothar Koenigs. Alexandra Deshorties and Tomislav Lavoie take on the title roles.
Performance Dates: March 13-27, 2021
The company will stage a concert based on Maeterlinck’s “Pelléas et Mélisande” headlined by Judith Chemla in a production by Richard Brunel. The performance features music by Debussy, Fauré, and Sibelius.
Performance Dates: March 14-20, 2021
In April, the company will start off a festival dedicated to fairy tales. First up is Ravel’s “L’Heure Espagnole” with musical direction by Vincent Renaud and direction by James Bonas. Soloists from the Opéra de Lyon studio will star.

Next up is Carl Orff’s “La Lune,” also starring soloists from the Opéra de Lyon studio. Hugo Peraldo conducts.

The final opera to be presented in this April festival is Ravel’s “L’Enfant et les Sortilèges” with with soloists from the Opéra de Lyon studio.

Concerts
Soloists from the Studio of the Opéra de Lyon will perform in a gala soirée in early November.
Performance Date: Nov. 3, 2020
In December, Daniele Rustioni will conduct two concerts for the holidays with music by Rossini, Donizetti, Strauss.

Stefano Montanari will conduct Jane Archibald, Ann Hallenberg, and Andrea Mastroni in “Aci, Galatea e Polifemo.”

Opéra Citoyen
As part of its Opéra Citoyen series, the company will present Meredith Wilson’s “The Music Man” with musical direction by Karine Locatelli and a production directed by Jean Lacornerie.

Nicholas Ligeon, Julien Nini, and Carole Villiès lead “Échos de la Fabrique.”
