Shanghai Symphony Orchestra to Present World Premiere of ‘AI’s Variation’

The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra will present the world premiere of Hao Weiya’s new science fiction chamber opera “AI’s Variation on Nov. 4-5, 2021 at the Jaguar Shanghai Symphony Hall.

The opera, which was composed by Hao Weiya and Wang Yuanfei, will be directed by Zhang Jiemin and stars baritone Zhou Zhengzhong, mezzo-soprano Dong Fang, and soprano Jingling Li.

The work is set 1,000 years in the future and portrays a world in which humans and AI live side by side. The opera is structured across seven scenes to represent the seven days of the opera’s narrative.

The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra is one of the oldest and best known orchestral ensembles of its kind in Asia, with a tradition of 142 years. The organization has held more than 10,000 concerts and has premiered the largest number of contemporary Chinese works. The ensemble has performed all around the world including the United States, in Germany, Holland, Brazil, Switzerland and many other countries.
