Shanghai Symphony Orchestra Announces 2022-23 Season

The Shanghai Symphony Orchestra has announced its 2022-23 season.

For the purposes of this article, our focus will be solely on vocal performances.

Soprano Ying Huang will lead a performance in commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Zhu Jian’er. The showcase will feature music by the famed composer including “Water Dragon Chant” for soprano and orchestra as well as the 10th Symphony, “Lantern Festival,” and “Sketches in the Mountains of Guizhou.” Zhang Jiemin and Zhang Lu conduct.

Performance Date: Oct. 22, 2022 

Closing out 2022 will be a performance of Verdi’s Requiem with Guanqun Yu, Huiling Zhu, Jinxu Xiahou, and Shenyang as the soloists. Long Yu conducts.

Performance Dates: Dec. 24-25, 2022

There will be performances of Bizet’s “Carmen” with Huiling Zhu in the title role and Jinxu Xiahou as Don José. Guanqun Yu takes on Micaëla and Yang Xiaoyong will be Escamillo. Long Yu conducts.

Performance Dates: Jan. 13 & 15, 2023

Long Yu conducts a performance of Mendelssohn’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” with Xiao Xinyi and Tao Mengqi as the sopranos. The showcase will also feature Sylvia Chang as the narrator.

Performance Dates: March 31 & April 1, 2023 

Soprano Song Yuanming will lead a performance Wagner’s “Prelude and Liebestod” from “Tristan und Isolde.” Long Yu conducts the performance, which also includes music by Mozart and Wagner’s “Siegfried Idyll.”

Performance Dates: June 18, 2023

Mezzo Lu Yunfei will also appear in a “Rush hour Concert,” performing music by Händel, Gluck, Pallavicino, and Monteverdi alongside musicians from the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra.

Performance Dates: March 16, 2023
