Shân Cothi Makes Heroic Debut At Opernhaus Zurich

By Francisco Salazar

On Dec. 13, 2018, Shân Cothi stepped in for Angelika Kirchschlager at the Opernhaus Zurich.

When Kirchschlager canceled the role of Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd, the company was forced to call Cothi from Cardiff. The singer only had seven hours to rehearse the production alongside fellow Welsh singer Bryn Terfel and with the help of the prompter Matthew Ottenlips, Cothi charmed Zurich audiences.

Cothi has been recognized as a versatile classical, musical, and jazz singer who has performed all over the world. Cothi has been nominated for the BAFTA award and has performed in a West End production of “The Phantom of the Opera.” She first sang Mrs. Lovett at the Llangollen international Eisteddfod alongside Terfel.

Kirchschlager returns to Mrs. Lovett for the remaining performances, which run through Jan. 11, 2019. The production also stars Barry Banks and Elliot Madore and is conducted by David Charles Abell.
