Semperoper Dresden Announces Cast Change for ‘Eugene Onegin’ Concert Performance

By Francisco Salazar

The Semperoper Dresden has announced a cast change to its upcoming concert of Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin.”

The company announced that Christoph Pohl will sing the title role of “Eugene Onegin” replacing Andrei Bondarenko, who was forced to cancel.

Pohl has previously performed Tchaikovsky’s opera at the Semperoper Dresden in 2016. This season the baritone is expected to appear in the company’s “Capriccio” and “Il Barbiere di Siviglia.” He is also expected to perform at the Staatsoper Hamburg and Théâtre des Champs-Elysées.

Pohl will join a cast that includes Ekaterina Morozova, Stepanka Pucalkova, and Joseph Dennis. Jonathan Darlington will conduct concert performances.

The Semperoper Dresden is opening its 2020-21 season with concert performances of originally scheduled operas due to the COVID-19 crisis. The season opens with concerts of “Il Barbiere di Siviglia,” “Die Entführung aus dem Serail,” and “Madama Butterfly.”

“Eugene Onegin” opens on Sept. 12, 2020.
