‘Semele’ & ‘Die Zauberflöte’ Highlight OperaVision Streams in January 2021

OperaVision has announced streams for the first month of 2021.

The first opera to be streamed starting on Jan. 3, 2021 will be Barrie Kosky’s production of Handel’s operatic masterpiece “Semele” from the Komische Oper Berlin. The opera features Eric Jurenas as Athamas, Prince of Bœotia; Allan Clayton in the role of Jupiter, King of the Gods; Ezgi Kutlu as Juno; Philipp Meierhöfer as Cadmus, King of Thebes; Nora Friedrichs as Iris; Evan Hughes as Somnus, God of sleep/Priest; and Nicole Chevalier in the title role.

Konrad Junghänel conducts the Komische Oper Berlin orchestra. The opera was filmed on May 12, 2018, during its premiere at the Komische Oper Berlin. The broadcast will be available until Feb. 3, 2021, as part of the Komische Oper winter streaming festival.

Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte” from the Macerata Opera Festival will be streamed on Jan. 8, 2021. The opera’s cast includes Giovanni Sala in the role of Tamino, Valentina Mastrangelo as Pamina, Guido Loconsolo in the role of Papageno, Paola Leoci as Papagena, Antonio Di Matteo in the role of Sarastro, Tetiana Zhuravel as Die Königin der Nacht, and Manuel Pierattelli as Monostatos.

Daniel Cohen conducts the production by Graham Vick. The opera was filmed on July 29, 2018, and will be available to stream until July 8, 2021.

Kaija Saariaho and Amin Maalouf’s oratorio “La Passion de Simone” from the Royal Swedish Opera features mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter. Christian Karlsen conducts the Royal Swedish Opera Orchestra.

The oratorio was recorded on Oct. 17, 2020, and will be streamed on Jan. 16, 2021. The broadcast will be available until July 16, 2021.

Finally, Bellini’s opera “Il Pirata” from the The Kolobov Novaya Opera Theatre of Moscow will be streamed live on Jan. 23, 2021. The opera will star Dmitry Korchak, Pavel Yankovsky, and the Novaya Opera soloists.

Andrey Lebedev will conduct the production by Victoria Agarkova. The broadcast will be available until July 23, 2021.
