Seattle Opera to Host Annual Opera Center Open House This September
By David SalazarSeattle Opera and Classical KING FM will host their annual Opera Center Open House on Saturday, Sept. 26 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Opera Center.
The free event invites the public behind the scenes of both organizations, with live performances, facility tours, hands-on activities, and appearances by community partners throughout the afternoon.
This year’s Open House centers on Seattle Opera’s upcoming January production of “El último sueño de Frida y Diego,” the new opera by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Gabriela Lena Frank and Pulitzer Prize-winning librettist Nilo Cruz. The event will include a performance by mariachi musicians from the Highline School District, a community mural project, and a panel discussion on Chicana/o arts traditions by Nepantla Cultural Arts Gallery.
Additional programming includes a Season Preview Concert featuring highlights from Seattle Opera’s 2026-27 season, a conversation between General and Artistic Director James Robinson and Dramaturg Jonathan Dean, and a live feed of a working rehearsal of “Salome.” Other performances include a recital by winners of the Seattle Opera Guild’s Singer Development Award and a showcase by members of the Youth Opera Project. Attendees can also learn a dance from “Salome” Associate Director and Choreographer Carmine De Amicis or join a sing-along of operatic favorites led by Seattle Opera Chorus Master Michaella Calzaretta.
Tours of the Costume Shop and Props Department will run throughout the afternoon, and Classical KING will be live on air from the building.
Per an official press release, Robinson said, “The Open House is one of my favorite events of the season because it’s our chance to showcase the ways opera is a community-based art form. By inviting the public into our building to see the inner workings of an opera company, I hope we can provide audiences with both a deeper appreciation for how much work goes into making opera and a better understanding of how they can support our broader arts community.”
