By Francisco Salazar

The San Francisco Opera is set to present Handel’s “Orlando” in a production by director Harry Fehr.

The production is set to update the setting of the work to World War II London during the Blitz. English conductor Christopher Moulds makes his Company debut with Sasha Cooke in the title role of Orlando. She will be joined by Heidi Stober, Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen, Christina Gansch, and Christian Van Horn.

The production by Fehr features sets and costumes designed by Yannis Thavoris, projections designed by Andrzej Goulding, original lighting design by Anna Watson, and revival lighting by Tim van Hof. The production was first seen at the Scottish Opera and later by the Welsh National Opera.

“Orlando” was last performed with the company in 1985 with Horne in the title role, Valerie Masterson, Ruth Ann Swenson, Jeffrey Gall, and Kevin Langan. John Copley directed the San Francisco Opera premiere, which was conducted by Sir Charles Mackerras.

The opera is set to premiere on June 9 and runs through 27, 2019.
