Sarasota Opera to Host Second National Schmidt Vocal Competition Finals This June

The Sarasota Opera will host the Second National Schmidt Vocal Competition Finals, June 2-4, 2023, with the top three winners from each of the 14 regional competitions receiving a
$10,000 prize.

The Schmidt Vocal Competition is an annual event for US high school students in which more than 400 singers compete each year for more than $650,000 in cash prizes and
scholarships.

Award winners are chosen for scholarships that support their continued study at the university level and SVA provides educational mentoring and networking opportunities. “It
is exciting to return to Sarasota Opera this June, with our competitors singing on the stage of the William E. Schmidt Opera Theatre, with students right at the critical point in their
early careers as they begin to look toward professional training,” Linda McAlister,  Executive Director of SVA, said in an official press statement.

Judges for the semifinals include pianist Margo Garrett, mezzo-soprano Kathryn Hartgrove, tenor Stanford Olsen, soprano Beth Roberts and bass-baritone Kevin Short, who will choose three semifinal round entrants who will sing in a master class.

In the final round of 16 finalists, a jury consisting of soprano Alyson Cambridge, Detroit Opera Artistic Director soprano Christine Goerke, and Cincinnati Opera Artistic Director Evans Mirageas will award a top prize of $10,000. , a second prize of $7,500 and a third prize of $5.00.
