At On Site Opera’s annual fundraising gala the company announced the appointment of Sarah Meyers as its next Artistic Director, succeeding the company’s co-founder, Eric Einhorn.

Beginning in January, Meyers will join forces with General Director / CEO Piper Gunnarson and Music Director Geoffrey McDonald. She said in an official press release, “I am excited and honored to be joining On Site Opera as the new Artistic Director.” “I have long loved this company both as an audience member and as a stage director, admiring their courage, innovation, and responsibility to their artists and community,” she continues. “I am thrilled that this new role will allow me to amplify my passion for all that On Site does and is!”

Meyers has worked as a stage director for the Metropolitan Opera, where she has been on the company’s directing staff for more than a decade, as well as with On Site Opera, New Orleans Opera, San Francisco Opera, Lithuania National Opera, and New York City Opera, Juilliard School of Music, MassOpera, Chautauqua Opera Company, and many more. As an educator, she has directed and taught for Juilliard, Aspen Opera Theater Center, and Wolf Trap Opera. Meyers holds a BA from Harvard University in Music and Philosophy, and a PhD in Theatre from Columbia University, where she wrote her dissertation about the experience of the uncanny in contemporary performance. She is also the author of a new translation and adaptation of “Die Fledermaus,” which debuted with Boston University’s Tanglewood Institute in 2016, in a production she also directed.

Gunnarson said of Meyers, “She brings such a depth of knowledge about directing and producing opera, including in a site-specific format, and we share a similar set of values about fostering a positive work environment for artists. I’m really thrilled that she will play such an important part in our growing team.”
