Sara Jakubiak & Michael Volle Lead New CD/DVD Releases

Welcome back for this week’s look at the latest CD and DVD releases in the opera world.

This week audiences will get to hear two complete Salzburg productions and two world premiere recordings.

Joy Too

The Vertex Duo, composed of mezzo-soprano Kristin Gornstein and pianist Jeremy Chan release an album about grief.  The result is “JOY, TOO,” a collection of melancholy songs

Bohuslav Martinů: The Greek Passion

Unitel Classica releases the Salzburg Festival’s performance of Martinů’s work. The production stars Gábor Bretz, Sebastian Kohlhepp, Sara Jakubiak, Charles Workman, Christina Gansch, and Łukasz Goliński. Maxime Pascal conducts the production by Simon Stone.

In a review for OperaWire, Joao Copertino noted, “Bohuslav Martinů’s opera ‘The Greek Passion‘ is a work still in search of its audience. The opera, seldom performed, is considered to be one of Martinů’s finest compositions. This season’s Salzburg Festival tried hard to make ‘The Greek Passion’ a rare and visually noteworthy production” and “American soprano Sara Jakubiak‘s singing and musical phrasing in English was excellent. ”

Brahms: Ein Deutsches Requiem

Unitel Classica releases the Salzburg Festival’s recording of Brahms’ work featuring Elsa Dreisig and Michael Volle. Christian Thielemann conducts.

Pietro Auletta: L’Orazio

Dynamic releases a new critical edition by Bernardo Ticci of Auletta’s work starring Leandro Shira Patchornik, Giacomina Valeria La Grotta, Elisa Martina Licari, Lauretta Natalia Kawałek, Colagianni Camilo Delgado Díaz, and Lamberto Matteo Loi. The Orchestra Barocca Modo Antiquo is conducted by Federico Maria Sardelli.
