By David Salazar

San Francisco Opera has announced the creation of “The Monkey King” Committee.

The goal of the committee will be to bring together a wide range of leaders across different industries to support the world premiere of the Huang Ruo and David Henry Hwang opera this November at the War Memorial Opera House.

The Committee will be led by the San Francisco Opera Board of Directors member as Committee Co-Chairs Jerome Dodson, Doreen Woo Ho and Soo Venkatesan.

“I am excited to lead this Committee to promote and fundraise for this innovative and unique opera that brings the best of the best of Chinese classics to the operatic stage,” said Committee Co-Chair Doreen Woo Ho. “To me this opera also represents a huge opportunity to build a people-to-people cultural bridge between the U.S. and China as Monkey King, who is such a beloved figure, resonates across so many Asian communities here and in Asia.”

Jensen and Lori Huang are Honorary Chairs. Other Honorary Committee Members include Carol Franc Buck Foundation; Chinese Heritage Foundation of Minnesota; Emmanuel Chao; Jerome and Thao Dodson; Sue Graham Johnston and Eric Johnston; Koret Foundation; Lyna Lam and Chris Larsen; Margaret Liu Collins; Isabel and Insik Rhee; Marieke and Jeff Rothschild; Maria Manetti Shrem; Nadine M. Tang; and Akiko Yamazaki and Jerry Yang. Committee Members include Pearl Lam Bergad, Claire Bobrow, Ken Fong, Tim Kahn, Fred Levin, Annie Liu, Maryam Muduroglu, Peggy Nute, Shirley Soong, Jay Xu, Melinda Yee Franklin, Mark Young, and Jian Zhang.

The Committee will host several events in order to promote the opera, including the Opening Night Dinner Celebration on Nov. 14, right before the opera takes the stage for the first time ever.
