San Francisco Opera To Showcase ‘Arabella’ On KDFC

By Francisco Salazar

The San Francisco Opera has announced it will broadcast a historical performance of Strauss’ “Arabella.”

The company announced that on Feb. 4 at 8 p.m., the Bay Area’s Classical KDFC will broadcast a 1980 performance of “Arabella” starring soprano Kiri Te Kanawa in the title role, Barbara Daniels as Zdenka, tenor William Lewis as Matteo and baritone Ingvar Wixell as Mandryka, with German conductor Wolfgang Rennert. The performance comes from the company’s archives and will be hosted by announcer Dianne Nicolini.

Te Kanawa, who recently announced her retirement from the opera stage, was celebrated for her Strauss work and Mozart. She continues to train young artists and heads over the BBC Cardiff Singer of the World jury every two years.

“Arabella”, which features one of Strauss’ most lush and refulgent scores, premiered at San Francisco Opera on October 29, 1980 and returns next season starring Ellie Dehn in her role debut as Arabella, Heidi Stober as Zdenka, Brian Mulligan as Mandryka, Daniel Johansson as Matteo and Hye Jung Lee as the Fiakermilli. Chief conductor of the Dutch National Opera and renowned Strauss interpreter, Marc Albrecht will make his American operatic debut on the podium.
