San Francisco Opera to Present ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’

San Francisco Opera is set to present the West Coast premiere of Poul Ruders and Paul Bentley’s “The Handmaid’s Tale.”

The work based on Margaret Atwood’s novel was originally scheduled for the 2020–21 Season and was delayed by the pandemic.

The work will be conducted by Karen Kamensek and will be directed by John Fulljames, former Director of the Royal Danish Opera and Associate Director of London’s Royal Opera House.

The ensemble cast will include Irene Roberts, Lindsay Ammann, Sarah Cambidge, John Relyea, Simone McIntosh, Christopher Oglesby, Brenton Ryan, Rhoslyn Jones, Katrina Galka, Nikola Printz,  Caroline Corrales, Gabrielle Beteag, Sara Couden, and Matthew DiBattista.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” is set to be presented seven times between Sept. 14 and Oct. 1, 2024. The company will livestream the work on Sept. 20 and will be available to watch on demand for 48 hours beginning on Sept. 23 at 10 a.m. PT.
