San Francisco Opera To Close Season With ‘Rusalka’

By Francisco Salazar

The San Francisco Opera is set to present Dvořák’s “Rusalka” in a production by David McVicar.

The production will showcase Rachel Willis-Sørensen in her role debut as Rusalka, Brandon Jovanovich as the Prince, Jamie Barton as Ježibaba, bass Kristinn Sigmundsson as Vodník and Sarah Cambidge as the Foreign Princess. South Korean maestra and Houston Grand Opera Principal Guest Conductor Eun Sun Kim will conduct first Company engagement.

McVicar’s production was recently showcased at the Lyric Opera of Chicago where critics praised the production and said, “McVicar has infused his production with the supernatural mysteries and dark humor of Czech folklore, bringing us a world in which pristine nature is progressively despoiled by humankind.”

Willis-Sørensen made her San Francisco debut in 2015 as Eva in “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg,” while Jovanovich recently performed in the Ring Cycle with San Francisco. Mezzo-soprano Barton recently performed Sara in a production of “Roberto Devereux” as well as in the Ring Cycle with the company.

“Rusalka” is set to open on June 16 and runs through the 28, 2019.
