San Francisco Opera Guild Announces ‘An Evening on the Stage’

By David Salazar

The San Francisco Opera Guild will present its sixth annual “An Evening on the Stage” to honor John A. and Cynthia Fry Gunn. The event will take place on Nov. 28, 2018.

At the event, John Gunn, Chairman of San Francisco Opera’s Board of Director and Cynthia Fry Gunn, an arts patron, will be presented with the Opera Guild’s 2018 Crescendo Award. The event will feature a performance from an unnamed artist at the San Francisco Opera.

Proceeds from the event will go toward the San Francisco Opera Guild’s education programs that service more than 50,000 students and 200 schools throughout Northern California.

John Gun has served on the company’s Board of Directors since 2002 and became the chairman in 2008. In 2008, the Gunns made a gift of $40 million to help fund the projects of General Director David Gockley; it was a historic gift for the company. They have sponsored such productions as “Appomattox,” “Girls of the Golden West,” and “Le Grande Macabre,” among others.

“Opera is a dynamic art form and all of us play a role in keeping it vital,” John Gunn stated in a press release. “We must expand our repertoire and our audiences and strive for financial flexibility. And we depend on donors to keep opera alive.”
