San Francisco Opera Earns Major Multi-Year Gift from Jensen & Lori Huang
By David SalazarSan Francisco Opera has received a major multi-year donation.
The company revealed that during a special “Monkey King” event hosted by the Jensen and Lori Huang in the Green Room at the War Memorial Veterans Building, the Huangs, who serve as Co-Chairs of The Monkey King Honorary Committee, announced that they will contribute $5 million annually to support the Company’s artistic work and the broader San Francisco artist community.
This season, the gift helps underwrite “The Monkey King” by composer Huang Ruo and librettist David Henry Hwang. In future years, the funding will support mainstage productions, young artist training, community initiatives including the “Bohème Out of the Box” series, and digital media projects, expanding on record ticket sales and growing audiences.
The Huangs have also committed to hosting events each year on the War Memorial campus.
“San Francisco is home to innovation and imagination,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA, per an official press release. “We are delighted to partner with and support the San Francisco Opera – one of the city’s greatest anchors of culture and the arts.”
“The Monkey King” recently had its world premiere on Nov. 14 and has sold out its eight-performance run, generating more than $3 million in community support. OperaWire’s review by Lois Silverstein noted that “From opening curtains to closing, the opera house remained electrified with sound, color, movement, and spectacle.”
