San Francisco Opera Announces New Conductor for ‘Ernani’

The San Francisco Opera has a announced a cast change for its upcoming production of Verdi and Piave’s “Ernani.”

The company announced that the Caroline H. Hume Music Director Designate Eun Sun Kim will conduct Verdi’s “Ernani,” replacing James Gaffigan who has withdrawn from the production due to family reasons.

Sun Kim, who was appointed San Francisco Opera’s Caroline H. Hume Music Director Designate in December, will return to the company  ahead of schedule. She is an acclaimed interpreter of Verdi’s stage works including “Rigoletto” and “Il Trovatore” for the Berlin State Opera and “La Traviata” for Houston Grand Opera. This will be first time she conducts “Ernani” in her career.

Sun Kim is set to conduct a cast that includes Russell Thomas in the title role, Michelle Bradley, Simone Piazzola, and Christian Van Horn.

The production opens on June 7 and runs through July 2, 2020.
