
San Francisco Opera Announces New Casting for ‘Der Ring des Nibelungen’
By David SalazarSan Francisco Opera has announced additional casting for its June and July 2028 presentations of Wagner’s “Der Ring des Nibelungen,” with Music Director Eun Sun Kim conducting three complete cycles.
Kim leads the work for the first time in Francesca Zambello’s staging, which is shared with Washington National Opera. The production debuted at the War Memorial Opera House in 2011 and was revived there in 2018. The cycles run June 13 to 18, June 20 to 25, and June 27 to July 2, 2028.
The cast is headlined by previously announced artists soprano Tamara Wilson as Brünnhilde in her company debut, baritone Brian Mulligan as Wotan, and tenor Simon O’Neill as Siegfried. Bass baritone Falk Struckmann sings Alberich in “Das Rheingold,” “Siegfried,” and “Götterdämmerung.” Soprano Julie Adams is Sieglinde in “Die Walküre” and Gutrune in “Götterdämmerung,” while tenor Christopher Sokolowski sings Siegmund in “Die Walküre” and Froh in “Das Rheingold.” Mezzo-soprano Judit Kutasi is Fricka in “Das Rheingold” and “Die Walküre.”
Tenor Brenton Ryan sings Loge, and tenor Zhengyi Bai is Mime in “Das Rheingold” and “Siegfried.” Bass John Relyea sings Fafner in “Das Rheingold” and “Siegfried” and Hagen in “Götterdämmerung,” and bass Kwangchul Youn is Fasolt and Hunding. Bass baritone Lauri Vasar sings Donner and Gunther, and Annika Schlicht is the Second Norn and Waltraute in “Götterdämmerung.”
Current Adler Fellows Sadie Cheslak, Sofia Gotch, and Mary Hoskins are cast as Erda and the First Norn, Woglinde and the Forest Bird, and the Third Norn, respectively. Mezzo-sopranos Laura Krumm and Taylor Raven sing Wellgunde and Flosshilde.
