San Francisco Opera Announces Major Cast Changes For 2019 Summer Season

By David Salazar

The San Francisco Opera has announced a number of cast changes for its 2019 summer season.

The first major change is that of the character of Medoro in “Orlando.” Countertenor Aryeh Nussbaum Cohen will assume the role, replacing David Daniels. Nussbaum Cohen is a second-year San Francisco Opera Adler Fellow and he is set for performances of “Saul” with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra.

In “Rusalka,” Icelandic bass Kristinn Sigmundsson will appear, substituting for Ferruccio Furlanetto. Sigmundsson had his San Francisco Opera debut in 2003 and has appeared many times since with the company. In that same opera, conductor Eun Sun Kim will make her company debut.

Speaking of conductors, Michelle Merrill will lead the performance of “Carmen” on June 20 in lieu of James Gaffigan who is still scheduled to take on the other performances of the opera. Per a press release, the performance on June 20 has created a scheduling conflict for Gaffigan, allowing the opportunity for Merrill to take over. Merrill has appeared with such ensembles as the Orchestre National d’Île-de-France, the National Symphony Orchestra, Toronto Symphony Orchestra; she also appeared for four years as Associate Conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra
