San Francisco Opera Announces Major Cast Change for ‘Elektra’

By David Salazar

Michaela Martens will replace Stephanie Blythe in the San Francisco Opera’s upcoming production of “Elektra.”

Martens will appear in the role of Klytemnestra in a new staging by Keith Warner, which starts on Sept. 9, 2017. She is set to take on Klytemnestra with Houston Grand Opera in January 2018 as well.

Martens’ San Francisco Opera debut came in 2015 as Cassandre in Berlioz’s “Les Troyens.” This will be her first set of performances in “Elektra,” though she is no stranger to the dramatic German repertoire. She has sung as Herodiades in Strauss’ “Salome, Kundry in “Parsifal” and Ortrud in “Lohengrin.” She has also appeared at such major companies as the Metropolitan Opera, Munich’s Bavarian State Opera, Vienna State Opera, Grand Théâtre de Genève and English National Opera.

The upcoming production of the “Elektra” at SFO will feature Christine Goerke in the title role, Adrianne Pieczonka as Chrysothemis, Alfred Walker as Orest and Robert Brubaker as Aegisth.

The run, which will be conducted by Henrik Nánási, will last for a total of six performances.
