San Francisco Opera Announces Casting Update for ‘Dream of the Red Chamber’

By Francisco Salazar

The San Francisco Opera has announced a cast update for its upcoming production of “Dream of the Red Chamber.”

The company revealed that tenor Konu Kim will make his Company and role debuts as Bao Yu in the new work, replacing Yijie Shi who has withdrawn for personal reasons.

Kim is a recent graduate of the young artist program at London’s Royal Opera, Covent Garden and has performed at the Donizetti Festival in Bergamo and the Glyndebourne Festival. During his 2019 debut at the Donizetti Festival as Leone de Casaldi in the premiere of “L’Ange de Nisida,” OperaWire noted he was “revelatory … this is a tenor to look out for.”

He joins a cast that includes Meigui Zhang, Hongni Wu, Karen Chia-ling Ho, Hyona Kim, Sabina Kim, and Guang Yang.

Maestro Darrell Ang makes his Company debut leading the San Francisco Opera Orchestra and Chorus in Stan Lai’s production designed by Academy Award-winner Tim Yip, with lighting by Gary Marder.

“Dream of the Red Chamber” will be performed from June 14 to July 3, 2022.
