The San Francisco Opera has announced a cast change for its production of Verdi’s “Il Trovatore.”

The company said that mezzo-soprano Ekaterina Semenchuk will perform the role of Azucena in all performances, replacing Anita Rachvelishvili who has withdrawn for personal reasons.

Semenchuk returns to San Francisco following performances with the company in productions of “ Luisa Miller”  “Aida,” and “Cavalleria Rusticana.”

Semenchuk joins a cast that includes Angel Blue as Leonora, Arturo Chacón-Cruz as Manrico and George Petean as Count di Luna. San Francisco Opera’s Caroline H. Hume Music Director Eun Sun Kim conducts the acclaimed production by Sir David McVicar.

“Il Trovatore” opens on Sept. 12 and runs through Oct. 1, 2023. The third performance, on Sept. 20, will be available as a livestream.
