San Diego Opera to Present ‘The Falling & The Rising’

By David Salazar

San Diego Opera is set to conclude its 2019-20 season with a production of Zach Redler’s “The Falling and the Rising” this May.

The opera, which is a co-commission between San Diego Opera, the US Army Field Band and Soldier’s Chorus, Seattle Opera, Arizona Opera, Opera Memphis, TCU, and Seagle Music Colony, will appear at the Balboa Theater on May 8, 9, and 10, 2020. The work had its world premiere in 2018.

It tells the story of an unnamed female soldier who is wounded by a roadside IED. She is placed in an induced coma and is faced with taking the journey back toward healing and home.

“The Falling and the Rising” tells real stories of service. It bridges the gap between our military and the people we serve and who support us. What the audience leaves with is not just that important connection, but also an understanding that the true strength of our Army is its people,” Sergeant First Class Ben Hilgert of The US Army Field Band and Soldiers’ Chorus told OperaWire.

The opera will star Teresa Alzadon as the Soldier with Gabrielle Florez, Babtunde Akinboboye, and Walter DuMelle as Doctors. Alan Hicks will direct the opera with Bruce Stasyna conducting.
