San Diego Opera To Perform ‘Aging Magician’

The San Diego Opera is set to present the West Coast premiere of “Aging Magician” starting on March 13, 2020, with matinee and evening performances scheduled on March 14 at the Balboa Theatre. 

The opera-theatre hybrid will be produced by Beth Morrison Projects  and will also feature the Brooklyn Youth Chorus in its company debut. 

The opera tells the story of an aging clockmaker who is working on a children’s book and finds himself lifted off to a world where fantasy and reality come together. 

“Aging Magician” will star Rinde Eckert in his company debut as the Aging Magician Harold. Eckert is recipient of a Marc Blitzstein Memorial Award (for Lyricist/Librettists) from the American Academy of Arts and Letters (2005), an Alpert Award (for Theater work) (2009), and a Guggenheim Fellowship (in composition) (2007). He is also a Grammy Award winner and has appeared as a soloist with such organizations as the New York Philharmonic and BBC Philharmonic. 

Julian Crouch will direct the work with Berkun Menaker conducting; both will be making their respective company debuts. The Attacca Quartet will perform he music by Paola Prestini.
