The Salzburg Easter Festival has announced a cast change for its production of Wagner’s “Tannhäuser.”

The company said that “Elīna Garanča has dropped out of the Salzburg Easter Festival as Venus in Richard Wagner’s ‘Tannhäuser,’ due to illness.

As a result, Emma Bell will perform the part. Bell recently made Wagner debuts in Munich, Berlin, Hamburg, and Zurich. She has performed at the Metropolitan Opera, the Teatro Real Madrid, the Glyndebourne Festival Opera, The Dallas Opera, Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Opernhaus Zürich, and Staatsoper Hamburg.

Bell joins a cast that includes Jonas Kaufmann, Marlis Petersen, George Zeppenfeld, and Christian Gerhaher. Andris Nelsons conducts.

“Tannhäuser” is set to be performed from April 1 to April 9, 2023.
