Saioa Hernandez To Replace Iréne Theorin In ‘La Gioconda’

By Francisco Salazar

Soprano Saioa Hernandez will sing the role of “La Gioconda” in tonight’s performance at the Gran Teatro del Liceu.

The Liceu announced that Iréne Theorin is indisposed and therefore will not perform the title role. As a result, Hernandez will take on the role in a performance, which is scheduled to be broadcast live in cinemas.

Hernandez made her Liceu debut last week in the title role stepping in for Anna Pirozzi, who replaced Theorin in two performances. Theorin was able to perform on the April 7 performance and is still scheduled for April 13 and 15.

Hernandez is having a breakout year having opened the Teatro alla Scala’s 2018-19 season and making her role debut as Maddalena in “Andrea Chenier” in Modena.

The soprano joins a cast that includes Brian Jagde, Dolora Zajick, Ildebrando D’Arcangelo, Gabriele Viviani, and María José Montiel.

Guillermo García Calvo conducts all performances, which run through April 15, 2019.
