Ryan Speedo Green Wins 2023 Beverly Sills Award

The Metropolitan Opera has announced that Ryan Speedo Green is the winner of the 2023 Beverly Sills Award; this is the second time that he receives the distinction following a victory in 2021 when he was named alongside four other artists.

The honor comes with a $50,000 cash award that recognizes major singers with rising Met Opera careers.

Green is currently in the midst of a run of “Champion” at the Met. Of his performance, OperaWire noted that he “sang with a much silkier and robust sound, which was often tested throughout by a wide variety of vocal styles, especially more rhythmic dance numbers during the start of both halves of the opera. His “When’s a man a man” was a highlight of his vocal interpretation, his legato allowed to flourish, imbuing the younger Emile with a touch of what he would eventually become in Owens’ incarnation.”

He has also performed in “The Death of Klinghoffer,” “Madama Butterfly,” “Tosca, and “Parsifal.”

“I remain profoundly honored to be the recipient of the Beverly Sills Award for the second time,” Green said in an official press statement. “Ms. Sills’s infectious vitality and legacy of arts advocacy continues to radiate through the hallowed halls of the Met and beyond, and I look forward to standing in the glow of that heritage.”
