Ruxandra Donose & Kateřina Kněžíková Highlight Bamberger Symphoniker’s 2019-20 Season

Bamberger Symphoniker has announced its 2019-20 season. For the purposes of this article, we will focus on vocal and opera-related performances.

Jakub Hrůša will conduct the Bamberger Symphoniker during a performance of Wagner’s Prelude to “Lohengrin.” The program will also include Bohuslav Martinů’s Concerto for Violin and Orchestra No. 2 in G Minor, Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 in C Minor, Op. 68, and Detlev Glanert’s “Allegro Furibondo” for Orchestra. Violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann will be featured.

Performance Dates: Sept. 27 – Oct. 2, 2019

The orchestra, led by Robert Trevino, will perform Max Bruch’s Prelude to “Hermione,” as well as Strauss’ Concerto for Horn and Orchestra No. 2 in E-Flat Major and Edward Elgar’s Symphony No. 1 in A-Flat Major, Op. 55. Hornist Andreas Kreuzhuber will be featured.

Performance Dates: Nov. 14 – 17, 2019

Nikolaj Znaider will conduct Wagner’s Preludes to Act I and Act III of “Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg,” Mozart’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 25 in C Major, K. 503, Edward Elgar’s “Enigma Variations,” Op. 36, and the world premiere of an encore by Konstantia Gourzi.

Performance Dates: Nov. 21 – 24, 2019

The Symphonischer Chor Bamberg will join organists Liubov Nosova and David Franke in a concert featuring works by Britten, Bach, Dobrinka Tabakova, Georg Weissel, Tchaikovsky, Bartholomäus Gesius, John Francis Wade, John Rutter, Anders Öhrwall and George Ratcliffe.

Performance Date: Dec. 8, 2019

Adam Fischer will lead the orchestra through a performance of Haydn’s “Farewell” Symphony and Bartók’s one-act opera “Bluebeard’s Castle,” featuring Baritone Miklós Sebestyén and mezzo-soprano Ruxandra Donose.

Performance Dates: Dec. 13 & 15, 2019

Nathalie Stutzmann will conduct a special New Year’s Eve performance of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 in D Minor, Op. 125, featuring soprano Siobhan Stagg, alto Jennifer Johnston, tenor Bror Magnus Tødenes, baritone Leon Košavić, and the Symphonischer Chor Bamberg.

Performance Dates: Dec. 30 & 31, 2019

Under the baton of Jakub Hrůša, the orchestra will perform Jan Václav Voříšek’s Symphony in D Major, Op. 24, Mozart’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra No. 20 in D Minor, K. 466, and Beethoven’s Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 36. Pianist Hélène Grimaud will be featured.

Performance Dates: Jan. 9 – 12, 2020

Jakub Hrůša will conduct Ravel’s Concerto for Piano and Orchestra in G Major, featuring pianist Hélène Grimaud, and Mahler’s Symphony No. 4 in G Major for Soprano and Orchestra, featuring soprano Kateřina Kněžíková.

Performance Dates: Jan. 15 – 19, 2020

Juraj Valčuha will conduct Verdi’s “Messa da Requiem,” featuring a soprano [TBA], mezzo-soprano Elena Zhidkova, tenor Antonio Poli, bass Riccardo Zanellato, and the Symphonischer Chor Bamberg.

Performance Dates: Mar. 7 & 8, 2020
