Royal Swedish Opera Closes Until January

By Francisco Salazar

The Royal Swedish Opera has canceled all productions until 2021.

In a statement, the company said, “due to the coronavirus, we have decided to cancel all public events at the Royal Opera until December 31. We will contact ticket holders via email and will continuously update operan.se with the latest information.”

The news comes as Sweden is seeing a growing number of COVID-19 cases. The country recently reported a record number with 5,764 on Nov. 11 and hospitalizations have also increased dramatically, with over 1,000 patients with COVID-19 being treated in hospitals.

Sweden, which initially did not do a lockdown, has moved to ban the sale of alcohol in pubs and the country is planning on introducing travel restrictions.

The Royal Swedish is one of the last opera houses in Europe following a second wave. The company will continue to offer digital programs through its streaming platform.
