Royal Opera House Announces Spring & Summer Schedule

The Spring and Summer will consist of in-person and streamed performances beginning May 17, 2021. For the in-person presentations, there will be a socially distanced audience.
The Royal Ballet and The Royal Opera will host world premieres, repertory favorites, and the world’s first opera in hyper-reality. For the purposes of this article, we will only highlight the operatic and vocal works that the company announced.
The Spring Season will open with the Royal Opera continuing to embrace the digital stage with “8Bit.” The new work will be a series of eight experimental works which bring together some of the most innovative contemporary artists in five short films, two audio performances, and a web browser experiment. The opera will be for online audiences only.

The Linbury Theatre will reopen with the world’s first opera in hyper-reality entitled “Current, Rising.” The opera will be a collaboration between the Royal Opera House’s innovation program, Audience Labs, Figment Productions, and Royal Holloway, University of London. The work is being developed by a female-led creative team and it will combine virtual reality with a multisensory set.
Performance Dates: May 21–June 10, 2021
Mozart’s “La Clemenza di Tito“ will open with a new production by Richard Jones. Mark Wigglesworth conducts the opera which is set to star Nicole Chevalier, Emily D’Angelo, Angela Brower, Christina Gansch, Joshua Bloom, and Edgaras Montvidas. The work will be available in person and online.

Puccini’s “La bohème“ will return to the stage in a COVID-safe adaptation and will star Joshua Guerrero and Rame Lahaj as Rodolfo, Anna Princeva and Simona Mihai as Mimì, Danielle de Niese and Anush Hovhannisyan as Musetta and Boris Pinkhasovich and Yuriy Yurchuk as Marcello. The production will be conducted by Evelino Pidò.

Mozart’s “Don Giovanni“ will return to the main stage conducted by Constantin Trinks and starring Erwin Schrott and Christopher Maltman as Don Giovanni, Gerald Finley and Paolo Bordogna as Leporello, Adela Zaharia and Vanessa Goikoetxea as Donna Anna, Frédéric Antoun as Don Ottavio, and Nicole Chevalier as Donna Elvira.

The Jette Parker Young Artists will perform their annual summer concert. The evening will include music by Verdi’s “Don Carlos” and “Falstaff,” Donizetti’s “Lucrezia Borgia,” and Gounod’s “Roméo et Juliette.”
