Royal Opera House Announces Major Cast Change for Upcoming ‘Pagliacci’

By David Salazar

Jorge de León is set to make his Royal Opera House debut.

The Royal Opera House has announced that de León will be singing the role of Canio in its upcoming production of “Pagliacci,” taking over for Fabio Sartori.

De León has performed with such companies as the Met Opera, Bayerische Staatsoper, Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Teatro Real de Madrid, the Gran Teatre del Liceu, and the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, among others.

Last year the Spanish tenor made his own personal history when he sang his first-ever encore of his career when he repeated “Nessun Dorma” during a Dec. 26 performance of “Turandot.”

De León joins a cast starring Aleksandra Kurzak (Santuzza), Roberto Alagna (Turiddu), Dimitri Platanias (Alfio/Tonio), and Anna Princeva (Nedda). Daniel Oren conducts the production, which runs from Nov. 30 – Dec. 15, 2023.
