Royal Opera House Announces Major Cancelations for Two Productions

The Royal Opera House has announced several major cast changes for two productions.

First up, the company announced that Joseph Calleja has withdrawn from the role of Foresto in “Attila” due to illness. He will be replaced by Stefan Pop. He joins a cast starring María José Siri, Ildar Abdrazakov, and Simon Keenlyside under the baton of Speranza Scappucci in her ROH debut.

Pop made his ROH debut in 2012 in “L’Elisir d’Amore.” He is set to appear in “Tosca” this season alongside soprano Angela Gheorghiu. He has also been a regular at such companies as Vienna State Opera, Opéra de Paris, Hamburg State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Opernhaus Zurich, and Teatro Real Madrid.

The company also revealed that Fabio Sartori has withdrawn from the “Pagliacci” on July 14 as he continues to recover from COVID-19. The tenor originally took over the role from Jonas Kaufmann who withdrew from all performances. Sartori then contracted COVID and was replaced by Roberto Alagna for the first few performances of the opera. The July 14 show featured Marco Berti.

Additionally, Aigul Akhmetshina has canceled two performances of “Cavalleria Rusticana” on July 14 and 17 due to COVID-19. She will be replaced by Martina Belli.
