Royal Opera House Announces Cast Change for March 13 ‘Fidelio’

Jonas Kaufmann has canceled his appearance in the March 13, 2020 performance of Beethoven’s “Fidelio” in London.

The Royal Opera House announced that due to illness, Kaufmann will not be able to perform. According to his official instagram, he been fighting an infection since before the opening night. As a result David Butt Philip will sing the role of Florestan.

Philip sang the March 9 performance of “Fidelio,” also filling in for Kaufmann. He was a member of the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme from 2012 to 2014 where he sang First Chevalier/Master of Ceremonies in “Robert le diable,” Abdallo in “Nabucco,” Pang in “Turandot,” First Knight in “Parsifal,” Gastone de Letorières in “La traviata,” and Ferrando in “Così fan tutte.”  He has also performed at the English National Opera, Opera North, Glyndebourne, Opera Holland Park, Teatro Real, Madrid and Deutsche Oper Berlin.

Philip joins a cast that includes Lise Davidsen, Georg Zeppenfeld, Simon Neal, Amanda Forsythe, and Robin Tritschler.

Kaufmann returns to the production for the final performance and HD broadcast on March 17, 2020.
