Royal Opera House 2019-20 Preview: Juan Diego Flórez & Isabel Leonard Headline Massenet Masterpiece

Juan Diego Flórez is set to return to the Royal Opera in the title role of Massenet’s “Werther.”

The opera production by Benoît Jacquot will be revived for the third time since its debut in 2004 production. Flórez will sing the role following acclaimed performances at the Teatro Comunale di Bologna and Opernhaus Zurich. 

He will be joined by mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard who makes her Royal Opera debut as Charlotte and with whom Flórez performed the role in Bologna.

British conductor Edward Gardner will lead the production with South African baritone and former Jette Parker Young Artist Jacques Imbrailo as Albert, American soprano Heather Engebretson as Sophie, English bass Alastair Miles as The Bailli and French tenor Vincent Ordonneau as Schmidt.

Rounding out the cast will be Scottish-Iranian bass-baritone Michael Mofidian as Johann, British mezzo-soprano Stephanie Wake-Edwards as Käthchen and South Korean bass-baritone ByeongMin Gil as Brühlmann.

“Werther” opens on Sept. 17 and runs through Oct. 5, 2019.
