Royal Opera House 2019-20 Live in Cinemas: Jonas Kaufmann & Lise Davidsen Lead ‘Fidelio’

On Thursday March 17, 2020, the Royal Opera House will stream Beethoven’s “Fidelio” into local cinemas, with international audiences getting a chance to see the transmission at a later date.

The performance will be conducted by Sir Antonio Pappano with Jonas Kaufmann as Florestan and Lise Davidsen in the role of Leonora. Other cast members include Simon Neal, Georg Zeppenfeld, Amanda Forsythe, and Egils Silins, among others.

Of the production, OperaWire noted that Lise Davidsen was the bonafide headliner.

“It’s first-class singing that makes Beethoven’s unyielding vocal writing sound easy, with Davidsen almost laughing off the high notes of her joyous Act one “Noch Heute.” Her Act three “O Gott, Welch ein Augenblick” was radiant but tender, her music-making above the stave a silver gleam. Comparisons with Birgit Nilsson scarcely seem hyperbolic for this phenomenal talent,” noted the review.

After this performance, audiences can expect cinema transmissions of such works as “Cavalleria Rusticana,” “Pagliacci,” and “Elektra.”
