Spanish conductor José Miguel Pérez-Sierra is the new musical and artistic director of the Royal Opera Festival in Krakow.

The festival has traditionally spotlighted Rossini works and while Pérez-Sierra will respect that tradition, “in future festivals, we will be adding operas from other styles to our Rossini and Zarzuela offerings, as both audiences and the musicians have shown interest in exploring new artistic avenues. It’s quite a challenge.”

He is the first Spaniard to take on the position at Poland’s renowned opera festival.

The conductor will continue his position as music director of the Teatro de La Zarzuela in Madrid as well as principal conductor of the Opera de la Coruña. In addition to performing with these organizations this season, Pérez-Sierra is also set to perform at the Palau de les Arts, Theater Basel, Opéra-Théâtre de Metz Métropole, and with the Krakow Philharmonic.
