Royal Opera & Ballet Credits Timothée Chalamet for Boosting Ticket Sales

The Royal Opera and Ballet’s Chief Executive Alex Beard is crediting Timothée Chalamet for boosting ticket sales.

Beard told the Times of London that following the actor’s comments that “no one cares about opera or ballet,” audiences were more enticed to going to the opera.

Beard said, “The public reaction was just fantastic… I thought it important that we didn’t issue a kind of hoity-toity response to Chalamet. We simply said ‘Take a look at what we’re doing, mate’ — for instance, the fact that the largest portion of our audience by age is 20 to 30-year-olds. And you know what? Our post got two and a half million engagements and half a million shares, just on Instagram. And our ticket sales got an immediate boost. So cheers, Timmy!”

Chalamet’s comments came in February and created a media storm that saw many opera houses respond with discount codes and social media posts. It even caused reactions on SNL and the Oscar stage. Numerous personalities also responded including Nathan Lane, Steven Spielberg, Jack Schlossberg, Jamie Lee Curtis, Alec Baldwin, Diane Warren, Karl Sofia Gascon, Leslie Odom Jr., Charlie Puth, Sheryl Lee Ralph, Misty Copland, Juliette Binoche, Whoopi Goldberg, Patton Oswald, Jonathan Bailey, Sunny Hostin, and Doja Cat.
