Sonya Yoncheva, Domingo Hindoyan, Roderick Williams Headline Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra’s 2021-22 Season

The Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra has announced the lineup for its first season under new Chief Conductor Domingo Hindoyan.

For the purposes of this article, we will focus on vocal and opera-related performances.

Hindoyan will officially launch the season with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 “Choral” with featuring soprano Anita Hartig, mezzo Jennifer Jonston, bass Tareq Nazmi, and tenor Andrew Staples as soloists. The concert will also see the world premiere of Roberto Sierra’s “Symphony No. 6,” co-commissioned with the National Polish Radio Symphony Orchestra and Boston Symphony Orchestra.

Performance Date: Oct. 14 & 16, 2021

There will be a performance entitled “Songs by Sondheim” featuring Louise Dearman, Caroline Sheen, Nadim Naaman, and Jeremy Secomb. Martin Yates conducts.

Performance Date: Nov. 6, 2021

Baritone Thomas Weinhappel will lead “Spirit of Christmas.” Ian Tracey conducts with John Suchet as the presenter.

Performance Date: Dec. 17-23, 2021

Andrew Manze will conduct Händel’s “Messiah” with Carolyn Sampson, Jess Dandy, Andrew Staples, and Darren Jeffrey as soloists.

Performance Date: Jan. 8, 2022

Mihhail Gerts will lead a performance of music by Schubert, Mahler, Vaughan Williams, and Sibelius, starring baritone Roderick Williams.

Performance Date: March 10, 2022

Hindoyan will lead a performance of “Bluebeard’s Castle” starring Jennifer Johnston and Károly Szemerédy. The first movement of Mahler’s 10th symphony will also be featured.

Performance Date: April 7, 2022

Jeannette Sorrell will lead a performance of Bach’s “St. John Passion” with Carine Tinney, Daniel Moody, Ed Lyon, and Roderick Williams as the soloists.

Performance Date: April 17, 2022

Members of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir will perform Grace-Evangeline Mason’s “Mahler’s Letters.” The performance will also include the composer’s Fifth Symphony. Vasily Petrenko conducts.

Performance Date: May 8, 2022

Hindoyan will join forces with Sonya Yoncheva for a pair of concerts featuring Martucci’s “La Canzone dei Ricordi” and Schumann’s Symphony No. 2. One concert will open with the “Lohengrin” Overture while the second will feature the Overture for “Luisa Miller.”

Performance Date: May 12 & 15, 2022

Chamber Music

Roberick Williams, Rowan Pierce, Kathryn Rudge, James Way, and Robert Murray will take on Wolf’s “An Italian Songbook.”

Performance Date: Sept. 15, 2021

The King’s Singers will present “Songbirds.”

Performance Date: May 25, 2022

Close-up Concerts

Mezzo-soprano Angelina Dorlin-Barow and bass-baritone Armand Rabot will present songs for Valentine’s Day by such composers as Donizetti, Brahms, and Mendelssohn.
