Royal College of Music To Present Bernstein-Berkeley Double Bill.

By David Salazar

The Royal College of Music will open a double bill production of Bernstein’s “Trouble in Tahiti” and Berkeley’s “A Dinner Engagement.”

Performances commence on June 26 and run for three additional shows through July 1, 2019.

Both operas provide windows into troubled marriages despite decidedly differing time periods that they are set in.

The works will be directed by Stephen Unwin and conducted by Michael Rosewell. Nicky Shaw will be the set designer while Ralph Stokeld will be the lighting designer for the two operas. Unwin has directed a number of works at the English National Opera and Royal Opera House.

There will be two, currently unnamed casts for the performances.

The two short operas were actually premiered within two years of one another.

The production will be made possible with assistance from the Basil Coleman Bequest.
